ANGOP has found out that at a certain point in Menongue Municipality, the ground sank close to the point where the rail passes through and left it suspended, thus compromising the normal circulation in the Lubango/ Menongue section.

According to the Mocâmedes Railway Company (CFM) board director for technical matters, António Cabral, the situation occurred on Saturday around 6am.

António Cabral said this was a critical situation for Mocâmedes Railway and customers, but assured that the company will do its best to sort out the matter in a short time.

''Technically, there was excess water, due to the latest heavy rains, hence the damages. According to our experience and based on previous similar situations we've been through, the situation might take up to one month to be sorted out'', he stressed.

He also informed that they are working closely with the Angolan Geographic and Cadastral Institute (IGGA) to survey the railway and the surrounding area with a view to preventing agricultural works or constructions in the vicinities.

According to the official, the authorities will destroy the constructions made within the perimeter reserved for the CFM.

Regarding the situation, some passengers and residents of the locality have said that, besides the use of motorcycles, the only means to transport their goods is by train, and with the stoppage of the rail transport the local dwellers will have many difficulties in connection with their products, due to the lack of cars in the region.

“Our businesses will be stalled as we sell and transport our products using the train. So our families will be left without sustenance”, the citizens have lamented.
