Official Bulletin: 1st row, Nº 59, Monday, May 15, 2006, of Diário da República

Summary: The Press Law is an act intended to set the general principles that governs the media work and regulates the forms of  access and freedom of the press, which is a fundamental right of the citizens, constitutionally established.

This right was the subject of a specific law passed in 1991, the Law n. º 22/91 of 15 June - Press Law which ensures the right to inform and be informed, and liberalise the media acitivity, allowing the coexistence of public and private media organs, which have played an important role in the democratisation of the society and pluralism of expression.

However, there is need for an update of the Law, adapting it to the new circumstances and making it match the new political, economic and social development of the country.
